Thy kingdom come

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement inviting Christians to pray during the nine days between Ascension Day and Pentecost, for more people to come to know Jesus.  What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing.

Through the centuries Christians have gathered at that time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ picks up this tradition. Over the past three years more and more worshipping communities have dedicated the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’.

This will be the third year that churches in the Knaresborough team have taken part, and we shall be repeating the practice established last year of having the daily services move around the churches of the benefice so that as many people as possible can take part.

What is new for us this year is that we shall have two services each day, Morning Prayer at 9.00 am and Evening Prayer at 5.00 pm. On 30 May, Ascension Day itself, there won’t be a 5.00 pm service as we shall instead be having a joint benefice Eucharist at St John the Baptist, Knaresborough at 7.30 pm. Also, there won’t be any additional services on either of the Sundays.

Church House Publishing has produced a splendid booklet Common Worship Daily Prayer for Thy Kingdom Come, which we will be using. Copies of this will be available in each of the churches.
